Often these days we find ourselves strung between the old and the new. We love retro technology - vinyl records, classic muscle cars, IBM Selectrics - but we chase after the latest Kindle or iPad. We yearn for a miraculous pharmaceutical fix for whatever ails us at the same time as we are embracing locally grown foods and exercise regimes.

At church, we want to energize our worship services, but we cherish the old time hymns. We want to revitalize our congregational life, but we honor time tested patterns of organization and action which served us well in the past. We even mine the scriptures to support our ambivalence - or overcome it.

On the one hand we remember the admonition to the Israelites that they must not remove the landmarks "set up by former generations" (Deuteronomy 19:14), and the apostolic admonition "to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3). On the other hand we remember God's promise through the prophet that "I am about to do a new thing" (Isaiah 43:19) and the Apostle Paul's declaration that "if anyone is in Christ there is a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
