February Diaconate Minutes
The First Baptist Church Diaconate meeting Wednesday, February 17, opened with prayer.
Moderator Karen Knauerhase introduced incoming At-Large member Charlotte Shepherd.
No financial reports were available. Pastor David Wheeler reported that January basic giving was approximately $34,000. All monthly rental payments are current. The renewed contract with Diamond Parking for the management of the parking lot is in effect and includes an additional income of $1,800/year, reflecting Solid Rock’s use of the lot.
Karen reported that Pastor David and the Executive/Personnel Committee continue to interview Business Administrator candidates.
A special business meeting will be held Sunday, February 28, in the sanctuary immediately after the 11:00 a.m. service to vote on the proposed amendment to our by-laws separating the duties of the Stewardship Committee Chair and FBC Treasurer. The proposed amendment, changing the word “shall” to “may” in two places, separates Treasurer duties from Stewardship Committee Chair duties. The proposed change still allows
one person to fill both positions without requiring further by-law changes.
The proposed amendment is a response to the difficulty the Nominating Committee continues to have finding a willing, suitable candidate for the current Treasurer/Stewardship Committee Chair position. This position remains unfilled. The proposed by-law amendment was presented at the January annual meeting and follows the required four-week notice period.
Solid Rock has installed, at its
expense, a grind-and-brew coffee maker in the Fellowship Hall kitchen; some electrical and plumbing upgrades were needed for the operation of the new machine.
Saveth Anderson reported for PASTOR PETER Im that on March 27 Cambodians from 10 different Oregon and Washington churches will gather to celebrate Easter at FBC.
PASTOR MIRIAM Mendez reported that monthly Bible studies will be held in members’ homes. She is leading a Good Friday service April 2. Three people are interested in joining FBC.
PASTOR SUZIE Gilmore was not present; she was involved in Ash Wednesday activities with the youth.
PASTOR DAVID reported that he had received positive feedback from those who have attended Solid Rock’s “The Way” services. Two people will be baptized on Sunday. He will attend ABCO’s Minister’s Council retreat at the beach next week.
FBC will hold Maundy Thursday services April 1; Good Friday services are at noon at First Christian Church. Sunday, February 28 a program, Coping with Cancer, will discuss faith-based responses to the disease. The program is free and all are invited.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE reports that pictorial directories will be available in late March.
Paul Mitchell has been nominated to join the PROPERTY COMMITTEE.
WORSHIP COMMITTEE reported that, after a work session with the pastors, Thanksgiving and Christmas Sunday services will not be combined this year. Instead, the first Sunday of December will be “Advent”
Sunday and all departments
will worship and partake in Communion together.
Services continuing to be combined at 11:00am are
Easter,
Pentecost, and
the August 8 outdoor service.
The English and Cambodian departments will worship together at 11:00 in the sanctuary on April 18 to celebrate FBC’s 35 years of Cambodian ministry.
The meeting closed with prayer.

Coping with Cancer: Faith Response to
Life-Threatening Illness
February 28, 2010- 3:00pm to 4:30pm
at First Baptist Church
Interactive presentations by a physician, a
patient, and a pastor will provide practical help and comfort for those who are struggling with serious illness or who care about someone with serious illness.
We will examine such questions as:
- What is cancer and what happens to those who have it?
- What can be done medically by technical advances?
- How do we respond emotionally to cancer?
- How can a faith community give spiritual support to those in our midst with cancer and to those charged with their care?
Spread the words far and wide.
We wish to inform, encourage and accompany.

America For Christ Offering 2010
America For Christ gifts support Christ-centered ministries that are transforming lives across the United States and Puerto Rico – from addressing Children in Poverty initiatives and resettling refugees violently driven from their homelands to
providing evangelism training, developing discipleship resources and leading ministry workshops and conferences.
Connect, care, and celebrate are Biblical verbs. At the root of our Christian faith is God’s desire that those who are separated from God by sin be re-connected through Jesus, God’s son. All of us see the tremendous need in the United States: This mission field cannot be ignored. Please join in giving generously to reach our neighbors, our community and our country for our Savior, Jesus Christ.
