Laity and clergy together carry out the serving ministries of First Baptist Church, each using their individual gifts and training.  Laity do the work of the church in harmony with the pastors and other staff.  Pastors are academically and theologically trained for their unique roles and assignments.  Sex, gender, race and age are not determinants of the use of gifts that God has given.  Standards for professional ministry are those adopted by the Ministry Department of American Baptist Churches, USA and American Baptist Churches of Oregon.  Respect for God’s gifting of both laity and professional ministers demonstrates personal and spiritual maturity within the church family.
